The characters of SU are the most interesting part of the show, in my opinion. They're at once understandable and mystifying. The more I look into them, the more I try and categorize them, and this makes me wonder about the presence of archetypes in SU. By archetype, I mean the embodiment of the most basic of human characteristics. A few common archetypes include the Hero, the Everyman, the Mentor, and the Villain.
I think that the more a character changes and evolves, the more that character breaks from the archetype upon which he was based. A Hero, for instance, can rise above being just the good guy who gets the girl and saves the day. He can wonder about his actions; he can ponder the consequences; he can think about what is good and what is evil; he can turn from good to bad, and turn back to good later on; he can get the girl, or sacrifice himself to help his friends out, etc, etc.
So my question to you is this: do SU's characters rely heavily on archetypes, or are they full-fledged characters with traits that fall outside of the archetypes? My answer is yes; what do you think?
