After Alone At Sea, it seems my fears have been confirmed; cross-gem fusion is addictive.
Jasper, someone who originally hated Fusion and saw it as a distasteful tactic, had a complete 180, and considering she is a Homeworld gem, not used to Cross-Gem fusion and was fused with Lapis for several months, this comes with little surprise to me after thinking about it.
However, this isn't the first time we've seen this happen in the show. Peral manipulated one of her friends, Garnet, just so she can be fused with her. Amethyst even tries to defend Pearl by saying that "Being fused with you makes us feel stronger".
We can even see difficulty in Garnet as a perma-fusion, as they cannot stand to be apart. This isn't a romantic choice of theirs, but a result of their addiction toward their initial fusion. That is why they lost so much focus during "Hit The Diamond"; they weren't fused and they really REALLY wanted to be, you could tell.
So what is the deal? Garnet says she "understands" fusion but does she really? Or is she a victim of all the others who "understand" fusion? Like Jasper or Pearl or Amethyst?
Perhaps this is why the Diamonds banned Cross-Gem fusion: because it drives them off of their set path, their duty, and they become addicted to this new form they've become. And if everyone was introduced to Cross-Gem fusion, it would be chaos.

Good af theory. It makes a lot of sense.
It could just be personal issues. Pearl, Amethyst and Jasper all wanted to feel strong. Jasper DID come quick to change opinions after fusing though.
Did they ban it after Garnet? Some of the Homeworld gems were whispering things like "This has never been done before." when they fused.
>Ruby and Sapphire have a healthy relationship >always fused together, never want to be individual
Do you think fusion has tricked them into thinking that they're in love?

Has fusion tricked them? I'm not sure. That would be a very interesting plot point. I find it a bit suspicious that they fall in love just because they fused once... but Gems don't need to be in love to fuse, and in fact we've seen that they don't even need to be friends or trust each other to fuse (though it is much more stable if you do). But I think it hasn't been done before because it is such a taboo. I mean, Blue Diamond wasn't messing around: you fuse with another gem not your own, you'll be shattered. Simple. So naturally you wouldn't see it much, if at all. Or if the common people didn't know, the Diamonds did.

I personally think it's because Cross-Fusion is less predictable and can sometimes lead to results like Malachite or Sugilite in a way, but the Homeworld doesn't want to risk it happening at all, period.
Same-Gem Fusions just result in a bigger version of the same gem and are very stable, and less likely to have something undesired come out of it.
Cross-Fusions are less predictable, since they tend to act like a totally different person who shares personality traits of both, result in a much different Gem, and stability isn't always that good for them. Plus, since they act like a totally new person most of the time, they may resist De-Fusing when it is time. There's also the possibility of them instead acting like two people sharing the same body, and then one might take advantage of the other, like Malachite.
Since Cross-Fusions, though they apparently tend to be stronger and more unique, have these possible risks to them, the Homeworld just decided not to take those risks, period, and then outlawed it completely.
Heck, on that subject, Jasper only fused with Lapis out of a desperation move. Perhaps she knew about the risks and just decided at the time that it was a last resort and didn't take the risks into account there.
Also, another question on the said topic. Since it was shown that Gems of the same type can have different weapons (i.e. Eyeball Ruby using a Knife instead of a Power Fist), do Same-Gem Fusions weapons combine like Cross-Fusion's Weapons do? Like if our Ruby fused with Eyeball Ruby, would their weapon be like a combination between Ruby's Power Fist and Eyeball Ruby's knife?
Or would they just multi-wield each weapon, sorta like Alexandrite?
