So I've had this theory running in my head for quite some time. Just like there's Blue Gems (Lapis, Aquamarine, Holy Blue Agate) part of Blue Diamond's court, yellow gems (Peridot, Topaz) and pink (Amethyst, Jasper), I feel like all the Pearls were from White Diamond and they're issued around to act as spies and agents for White Diamond to oversea other diamond and gems. Maybe even White Diamond's secret service.
Another part of that theory is that Pearls have similar abilities to White Diamond and is kind of foreshadowed by how Pearl fuses.
Part of another theory on fusion which will relate to that. There are two ways to keep control over a fusion.
1. Gems can only fuse with one another and keep control if they're hearts are synced together. Now it seems Rubies can also fuse but I feel that if the gem is the same it's almost automatic that they fuse because... well they're very much alike. But for different gems to fuse like Ruby or Sapphire their hearts have to be in sync. I feel rubies will see eye to eye with one another that's why they can do it same with Topaz. I think this kind of also goes with "love." Only with real love can they fuse. Steven could fuse with Connie and he couldn't fuse with Amethyst for a while until they sort of bonded quite a bit before fusing and becoming Smokey Quartz to defeat Jasper.
2. The other way to keep control over a fusion is to put a Pearl into the fusion. Anyone remember one of those earliest episodes? I had a sort of theory for as long as I could remember on the episode where Garnet and Amethyst fused and became uncontrollable. I had this theory before White Diamond's appearance. Pearl is required to keep control over the fusion. Hence why when Pearl fuses with Garnet and Amethyst they can maintain control but with only Garnet and Amethyst they lose control over their fusion. This means Pearl's got some kind of power to keep control over the fusion.
Now let's forward this to some of the recent episodes. When Yellow, Blue and Steven placed their healing hands on Nephrite they were able to get her back into sanity. But without White Diamond's influence it couldn't be maintained a lot like how Pearl was required to hold control over the fusion. It seems part of White Diamond's power is she can keep "control" over others. This made me think Pearls role in a fusion is very similar to that of White Diamond's role in gems and makes me feel they belong in the same court. Plus pearls are white and Pearls all seem to have a very maintain order and control sort of attitude which seems like something White Diamond is all about.
