Before I begin, I would like to say that I don't have any sort of personal vendetta against Rebecca Sugar. I think she is a wonderful person in many respects: a gifted songwriter, a wonderful storyteller, and artist of exceptional talent, and I very much appreciate all of the commitment and effort which she and her crew have put into their production.
With that being said, however, I would like to turn my attention to a few details present in the world which Rebecca has built:
1. The fact that certain major events in world history are stated by Rebecca to have never occurred; namely, World War II (and presumably World War I).
2. The fact that Rebecca has taken a mallet to the geography of Earth, rearranging certain continents, destroying whole parts of Africa, Russia, and the Indian Subcontinent; naming her own states and renaming already-existing states (as is the case with "Delmarva" and "Keystone.")
3. The fact that the show did not present itself as the sort of show to do this at its outset.
If these three points confuse you in any way, allow me to elucidate:
I believe it was in the 107 facts about Steven Universe video that WW2 was mentioned as having never occurred. Without that war, we wouldn't have a lot of the technology featured in the show, as the development of computers like ENIAC led to transistors, desktops, laptops, and smartphones, among other things. Steven uses technology like video games and smartphones, which wouldn't have been developed had IBM not worked with the US Miiltary to break Axis codes. These machines led to the transistor, which led to Silicon Valley and its technological boom, which later lead to laptops, computers,
In the episode "Keystone Motel," we learn that the state Keystone borders Steven's home state of Delmarva. Keystone's appearance on the map is exactly like that of Pennsylvania, as I recall. In the episode "It Could Have Been Great," we observe from a map of the Earth that Russia has been seriously altered in appearance, the Indian Subcontinent is now bordered by very large stretches of ocean, and that the entirety of West Africa has been erased as if it was never there.
It seems as though Rebecca Sugar doesn't know what she's doing with her own show, and it feels, to me, like a confusing and sudden set of worldbuilding choices. This kind of alteration does not seem planned or thought-out; however, I could be very incorrect on this notion, as we have yet to see what lies in wait for our heroes.
Perhaps the one last concern I have with this whole debacle is that SU didn't seem like the kind of show to take place in such a weird reality where major events in the course of human history never occurred, and where landmasses and the civilizations on those landmasses are destroyed or nonexistent. If Rebecca wanted to set it in an alternate universe, she ought to have made such an idea evident at the onset of the show. It doesn't seem proper for a showrunner to dump all of this on us at once and at such a late time in the series.
Those are my thoughts on the matter; what do you think? I have included a link to a Reddit discussion about this topic, if you wish to read it.
