I was piqued to write this after watching the scene in Onion Gang where the kids ask Steven to smash the beetle, and he refuses. It seemed like he was unable to bring himself to smash the bug. My guess is he's still having a difficult time overcoming his experiences with Bismuth and Jasper.
But is Steven too nonviolent? There's a difference between feeling overwhelmed by guilt from killing someone (as with Bismuth), and not being able to squash something as inconsequential as a single beetle.
What do you think?

Didn't Steven stab the fuck outta Bismuth tho? Yeah I know what you're thinking "He only stabbed Bismuth because it was his last option."
But he STILL DID IT, Steve ain't no bitch boy no more!
Steven totally could've squashed the fuck outta that bitch ass motherfucking beetle, I blame inconsistent writing.

Well to be honest squishing bugs in the form of some strange cultist Onion ritual is different from, say, stepping on one by accident.
Steven felt pressured, and it also confused Steven because his beetle won the race... why would he punish a beetle for winning?
Onions friends are weirdos.

Maybe it's a throwback to the Mayan tradition of sacrificing those victorious in the sacred ball game.

Well, in lots of cults those strongest are sacrificed to serve the gods they believe exist.
But it's a bunch of 6 year old kids and a fucking beetle.

Agreed. I kinda felt Steven was overreacting over the beetle too. Bismuth, I can see his point, kinda makes me think of Batman's philosophy there (which is a good thing), but still.
Reminds me of one of my problems with Miraculous Ladybug as well. She purifies the Dark Akuma Butterflies after freeing the people, she doesn't smash it under her heel like a badass! I mean it's a butterfly for Pete's sake, I'm not asking her to be killing people or something!
As remarked by Walter in The Big Lebowski: "Pacifism is not something to hide behind."
